The Piney WoodsFine Arts Association (PWFAA)
The organization is non-profit, membership is voluntary, and the board and officers serve without pay. Membership and board service is
open to everyone regardless of race, religion, national origin, sex, age, or physical handicap. The PWFAA goal is to provide a consistently
high level of entertainment and education in the arts to the schools and communities at large of Houston and surrounding counties,
promoting cultural awareness and understanding. Programs are selected to further these goals.
The PWFAA has broken ground in the area of Arts in Education. Our efforts have brought school time Arts programs to the county schools,
in some cases, for the first time in decades. Every student in the entire county will have the opportunity to experience arts programming during the school day.
The Association formed the Arts in Education Panel, consisting of Fine Arts teachers from all six school district to
enhance the relationship between the arts association and the schools. This panel orchestrates the annual Houston County Youth Talent Showcase
which features students from 6 districts in a supportive and non-competitive atmosphere.
In the area of community outreach the PWFAA actively seeks out successful Houston County minority Artists for programming.
A committee has been formed to arrange transportation and free admission for residents of local nursing homes to all events.
The Association has had incredible success in negotiating contracts with high quality acts that ordinarily would not be available to residents of this rural community.
The Association has over 75 volunteers.
"Whatever big-city folks expect to find in a small Texas town, it more than likely doesn’t include an arts group like the Piney Woods ..."
